PBL- What is it?

The acronym PBL can be used for several types of learning. In our Applied Learning Community(ALC) the term PBL refers to Purpose Based Learning, whether the learning is done through Project or Problem Based Learning, there is always a TEKS driven PURPOSE to our students' learning.

Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.

Problem Based Learning is a teaching method in which complex problems in or beyond the classroom are used as the vehicle to promote student learning of concepts and principles as opposed to teacher presentation of facts and concepts.

Students work on a PBL over an extended period of time- from a week up to a semester- that engages them in solving a problem or answering a complex question. They demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public product or presentation for an audience. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication skills.
