Under the direction of music teacher Phyllis Johnson, the 3rd graders at West Side Elementary School honored area Veterans, the Flag and gave thanks during their fall program. Students excitedly sang a tribute to being an American and giving thanks during this celebratory time of year. Some students’ recited prose during some of the songs, while others were responsible for serving as standard bearers for flags honoring each branch of the country’s military. A special honor was paid to the MIA’s and soldiers killed in combat. Each veteran attending the program was honored with a certificate as a special thank you from the school.

Students also paid tribute to the upcoming Thanksgiving season with songs and recitations. A special tribute was made in which students told how they could help establish peace in the world by beginning at home, school and in the community.

Assistant Principal Melissa McIntire served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. In addition, officers of the West Side PTO gave reports on membership, volunteer commitments so far this year and on plans for upcoming fundraisers.
